Hi, my name is
lUIS.
Louis might know that more than anyone. Born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia, he traveled the world as a merchant seaman. “I saw places like Egypt, Spain, the Panama Canal and more – I even went up the Mississippi River!”
It was quite a life, especially in port. And for the down times at sea? “I kept myself busy with my guitar.”
Eventually, life at sea caught up with Louis.
“I had to leave the merchant marine when I was 45. I had arthritis in my legs. I still live with a lot of pain.” Back here in Philadelphia, jobs haven’t come easy. “My last job was in demolition. I can’t do that kind of work anymore.”
Since returning to Philly, Louis has been homeless twice – and both times a Guest at Philly House.
“This place has changed a lot for the better,” he tells us. “There are all sorts of programs now, there’s the computers we can use, and the spiritual support – I study the Bible seven days a week.”
The case management program here at Philly House has also made a big difference in Louis’ life.
“They helped me get glasses,” he reflects. “I’m getting my medications now.”
What’s next for Louis? “I’m saving money to get a place of my own, and to get a guitar” he smiles.
